In the summer of 2006, film directors Dominik Graf, Christian Petzold, and Christoph Hochhäusler began corresponding with each other on the subjects of film aesthetics, the Berlin School, Germany and the film genre. Two years later they decided to continue this theoretical discussion with a joint film project: the DREILEBEN trilogy, composed of three individual stories revolving around the same “fait divers:” the escape of a convicted criminal from police custody.

DREILEBEN - DON'T FOLLOW ME AROUND, from German director Dominik Graf, is the second film in the DREILEBEN trilogy. In the film, Molesch (Stefan Kurt), a felon with a long history of violent and sexual offenses, has escaped from a hospital in the East German city of Dreileben, and Jo (Jeanette Hain) is a psychologist who has been brought in to help local authorities with their investigation. When Jo has trouble finding a hotel room in Dreileben, she turns to an old college friend, Vera (Susanne Wolff), and she invites Jo to stay with her and her husband Bruno (Misel Maticevic. Vera and Bruno are restoring a large house that had been used as a museum before the fall of Communism, and they have plenty of room for a guest, but the more time Jo spends with Vera, the more she finds she has little in common with her increasingly bourgeois friend, and matters come to a head when the two women learn they both dated the same man in their school days.

"The swiftness of the dialogue is matched by that of the plotting, where multiple subplots swell like tide pools, offering sudden new dimensions of corruption and violence to the sleepy small town setting. Using a distinctly grainy 16 mm-like stock (the other segments are shot in crisp HD), the film’s look and feel resembles a faded photograph, as if to emulate the story’s account of memory and perception’s inherent distortions." -Kevin B. Lee, Fandor

"DON'T FOLLOW ME AROUND is a screenwriter’s movie, in the best sense: talky and witty, packed with revealing tangents and glancing micro-observations." -Dennis Lim, Cinema Scope

“The trilogy's notion of the casually intersecting lives of people living in close quarters becomes the proper theme of this perceptive middle film, whose tone and m.o. are entirely Graf's own… A welcome dose of humor and affable perfs ensure that the film is also enjoyable as a simple story of two women trying to reconnect with the past and each other.” –Boyd Van Hoeij, Variety
