Welcome to the Graduate Writing Center
Writing Consultation Appointments at the Graduate Writing Center
The GWC offers friendly, experienced, and FREE writing consultation appointments to graduate and professional school students at all levels and in all disciplines. Meet with a graduate writing consultant to work on writing issues ranging from style and argumentation to grammar and syntax. Please keep in mind that the consultation appointments are interactive sessions, not proofreading sessions. If you need help with grammatical issues, the writing consultants are happy to help, but the goal of the consultation is to increase your skill level, confidence and independence as a writer.
How Do I Schedule an Appointment?
Appointments are limited to one appointment per week, available on a first-come, first-serve basis. You may schedule an appointment up to two weeks in advance when it becomes available using our online reservation system. If you have technical difficultites or are unable to access the internet, please call (310) 267-4805, between 9am and 5pm. If you have any questions about making an appointment or the GWC's services, you can also email us at gwc@gsa.asucla.ucla.edu.
In order to help you make the most of your appointment, all writers making appointments must fill out an intake form (click here to see form) and send it by email to gwc@gsa.asucla.ucla.edu the day before the scheduled appointment. It will take you a little time, but it will help the writing consultant understand what your writing needs are, and allow them to be prepared.
What Happens at an Appointment Writing Consultation Session?
You will have 50 minutes to talk with the graduate writing consultant at your appointment. You may discuss a specific writing project or general writing issues. Writing consultants can help with organization, grammar, style, process and many other issues. You may also consult them about oral presentations and public speaking.
Based on the information provided in your intake form, the writing consultant will ask you questions about your writing concerns and goals. Writing consultant may not be able to read your entire paper or project, so you should be ready to indicate which sections to focus on during your appointment. Come prepared to take notes and work actively on your writing because writing consultants will coach you on writing skills and strategies, not edit or proofread your work for you.
