This issue consists of five articles, and one interview, that address three important facets of contemporary applied linguistics research: second language acquisition (SLA), identity, and language from a literary scholar’s perspective. In regards to SLA, Jennifer Ewald’s piece explores second language teacher approaches to the first day of class, and how this initial interface both sets the tone for and influences the trajectory of the course. John Sherman’s piece then explores the underexplored notion of cultural bias in English as a Foreign Language textbooks. Crossley, Salsbury, and McNamara’s work then examines the important role of cohesion devices in non-native discourse and their correlation with the negotiation of meaning. In regards to identity, Anne Edstrom’s work investigates the role of identity motivations in language maintenance and loss through the investigation of a multigenerational immigrant family’s linguistic practices within the United States. Peter De Costa’s work then explores how literary expressions of identity may be used to both shape and refine future SLA research in a globalized world. Lastly, Afaf Nash’s interview with Michael Cooperson offers a literary scholar’s perspective on what it means to know and use a language, covering issues ranging from linguistic competence to living abroad.
